During my campus life two years ago, I had the experience to tutor a problem boy aged 16. He was shy. The first time we met, I asked him to sit down, while he preferred to stand there, with his two hands crossed upon his stomach. He was trembling and never looked into my eyes when he was speaking or rather murmuring.

He was at the third year of middle school and soon would attend the high school entering examination, which is a crucial point for Chinese young kids. He was good at school grades two years ago, but now he can hardly pass lessons like Chinese, English, Science, English etc. His elder sister complained: he is a smart kid, only too addicted to the online game, especially World of Warcraft online. He spent almost all his spare time during the past two years playing wow. When I asked him to why he stopped reading English, he simply replied he couldn't put his mind on it. He was too indulged himself in World of Warcraft.

There was the other side of the coin. When I asked him about future, he was so resolute that he was determined to have a game career. That's good but there will be a long way. Maybe he can find his way out. Maybe.

Not long before, there was the news that a Chinese 17 year old kid pours gasoline all over his classmate. When the reporter asked why he did it, the boy claimed he had lost himself in World of Warcraft and when he committed the crime he had transformed into a Fire Mage.
Besides under-aged players, the adults get their own problems too. Lin, Feng, Gui and Hua are colleagues. They play for weeks trying to move up 50 levels. All of them eating junk food, drinking Rockstar energy drinks to stay awake and not stopping to use the bathroom. As a result they become obese and unsociable with horrible acne and a lack of motivation while trying to defend themselves against a player who has reached the maximum level.
So is World of Warcraft all bad that people can be better off without it?
Imagine if there were no World of Warcraft this game at all, wouldn't people create other successful "wow"?
Besides the game design, which emphasizes the time you spend rather than the skill you master, the players or the social environment are most responsible for their tragedies or whatever comes to them. And every one in the society takes his place to make how the society looks like.

The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final installment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumored that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance.

In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camoflauge," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Aquilonians: Internally divided, but united against their barbarian neighbors, the Aquilonians live lives on the edge. Cimmerians: As the Hyborian Age comes to an end the northern barbarian clans of the Cimmerians know that the end of their time is drawing near too. King Conan I of Aquilonia is himself a Cimmerian, though not typical of his people. Although his life has been filled with wanderlust, his Kin care nothing for what occurs outside their clan territories.

Stygians: Masters of the magical arts and ruled by their consuming worship of the serpent-god Set, the Stygians excel at occult and diabolic lore. They learned long ago that true power lies in knowledge and in pacts with dark powers. This single-mindedness has allowed them become the only culture to harness the secrets of the Mage class and power that comes with it.

Modes Singleplayer as well as Multiplayer
Unlike most MMORPGs, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures includes a significant singleplayer experience as well
as deep overarching multiplayer gameplay. This is an atypical MMORPG feature, but one that has a purpose. Players enter the game as a lowly galley slave with no memory of his/her past, and over the first five to 20 levels of singleplayer action build the skills necessary to survive in the game's multiplayer levels. During this time you will traverse a variety of rich environments including jungles, deserts, mountains, valleys, dungeons and cities packed with NPCs, beasts and monsters, before eventually leveling up and moving back to your chosen culture’s homeland. Because the only character-related choices that players have to make at the game’s opening are their looks, clothing and culture, this singleplayer mode is important in deciding what class and subclass to pursue and thus the level of impact your character will have in greater multiplayer portions of the game.

In-game levels 20 and above are strictly multiplayer. 20-40 introduce players to guilds. 40-60 deal with large scale combat. 60-80 have the player interacting with King Conan and levels 80 and up represent end-game play. Here gameplay changes as social aspects of MMORPG gameplay take over on a large scale.

Real-time Combat That Takes Queues from the FPS
Traditionally MMORPGs have utilized a mix of auto and turn-based functionality in their combat systems, but Age of Conan dispenses with that, instead drawing inspiration from FPS/action games. Firmly rooted in the brutality of the Hyborian universe, game developer Funcom has devised an action-based system that not only provides the sense of actually being in the fight, but also requires the player to participate in it. That means no simple targeted attacks. Players can attack and defend from nearly any position in real-time, whether on the ground or atop a mount, while standing still or on the move. It’s a recipe for carnage and one that fits right into the world of Conan.

Resident Evil scares up CG film

Capcom and Sony Pictures coproducing animated film to tell a new story from the zombie-ridden franchise; release set for 2008.

Game publisher Capcom and movie maker Sony Pictures Entertainment have teamed up to produce three live-action films based on the Resident Evil games, each more successful than the last at the US box office. The pair today announced that they are teaming up once again, this time on a full-length, computer-animated Resident Evil feature.

The film will be titled Biohazard: Degeneration (Biohazard is the Japanese name of the Resident Evil series), and will introduce a new storyline within the series' universe. Beyond that, the only detail available about the feature is that it will be released next year.

The companies didn't specify if that release will be theatrical or straight-to-DVD, although game-based CG films have taken both routes in the past. In 2001, Square Enix released Final Fantasy: Spirits Within in US theaters, and then announced its retreat from the movie business after it failed to live up to expectations. Last year it returned to the world of game-based CG films with Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which was released straight-to-DVD, but received a much warmer reception than its theatrical cousin.

Capcom has a number of film projects currently in the works. The company is collaborating with Hyde Park Entertainment on a new Street Fighter movie featuring Chun Li as the central character. The film rights to Onimusha and Devil May Cry have also been sold by the company. [source:]

Glitches Hit Xbox Live online game system

Microsoft has apologised for the glitches that hit its Xbox Live online game system during the Christmas break.

The software firm said it was "disappointed" with its performance and promised a free downloadable game to all users as recompense.

It said the problems had been caused by a surge of people signing up and using the gaming service.

Microsoft said the growth in new users had been driven by sales of top titles such as Mass Effect and Halo 3.

Game offer

The Xbox Live service suffered an ongoing series of problems during the holiday season. The discussion boards and forums of many gaming news websites have been filled with gamers complaining that they could not sign up or get on to the service.

Writing on the Major Nelson website, Marc Whitten, general manager of Xbox Live, apologised for the "intermittent" service.

"While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance," he said.

He added the outages were driven by a record-breaking number of new members signing up, and the biggest ever number of concurrent users. Most Xbox Live members pay an annual fee to use the service.

As a reward for their patience, Mr Whitten said all eight million members would get access to a full Xbox Live Arcade game free of charge. Details of how to claim this game would be made available in the next few weeks, he explained.

The downloadable games on the Xbox Live Arcade typically cost up to $20 (£10).

The Xbox Live service lets owners of Microsoft's gaming console take each other on or help each other in games, and allows them to download lots of games and watch TV shows and films.

The word "W00t" is widely used by online gamers

A word widely used among online gamers has topped an online poll for Word of the Year run by US publishing group Merriam Webster.

The word "W00t" got most votes in the poll looking for the word that best sums up 2007.

It is now included in the Merriam Website open dictionary that exists on the web.

The word, complete with zeroes instead of Os, has become widely used in chat during online games or chatrooms among those celebrating. Merriam Webster defines it as "expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all)".

In a statement Merriam Webster president John Morse said it was a good choice because it blended "whimsy and technology".

"It's a term that's arrived only because we're now communicating electronically with each other," said Mr Morse.

Although the word has achieved great currency among gamers, opinion is divided over its inspiration.

Some claim it is an acronym for the phrase "We Owned Other Team" - meaning that the winning side comprehensively beat their opponents.

Others, in particular Wikipedia, suggest it comes from the tabletop role-playing world of Dungeons and Dragons and is an abbreviation of "Wow, loot!".

A minor faction suggests that it might be short for "Want One Of Those" and is an expression of technological lust for a gadget, toy or other trinket.

Despite its popularity online, Merriam Webster said it would only make it into the regular dictionary if its popularity lasts. If its longevity becomes proven it could join other net-inspired terms such as the verb "to google", "blog" and NSFW.

There are currently no entries for "Woot" or "W00t" in the Oxford English Dictionary.

While W00t has its backers, there are many other potential candidates for words that sum up the technological year.

Among gamers "Ding!" could also be a popular choice as it is widely used when players reveal that one of their avatars has levelled up or got hold of a coveted magical item in a game.

This word derives from Everquest because a "ding" sound effect played when a character went up a level.

Outside the gaming community, the word "poke" must be high up the list of good candidates for its currency among the growing numbers of Facebook users who use it to prompt people they know to get in touch.

Another possible is "tweet" which also emerges from that other popular networking site Twitter. The site shares short messages among groups of people and a "tweet" is the term for a single message sent over the service. It has become used in preference to "twit" for obvious reasons.

Other widely acknowledged net memes for the year must include "lolcats" - which involves captioning pictures of animals - usually cats - with humorous text typically spelled in a distinctive, if mangled, style.

In terms of technology one word that has been bandied around much more in 2007 than any other is "multi-touch". Apple's much hyped iPhone got the technological world talking about touch screens as a way to interact with a handset.
